The horses had a blast galloping through the woods. They maintained a steady pace alongside each other until we came to Lucien’s destination, and he called for them to stop. We were on a dark dirt road. It was unlike the tidy grass pathways the forest had created for the Wyld Hunt. This route had been here a long time. A pale blue light lit the forest up ahead, where the path curved.

Lucien was already off Alastor by the time Arion came to a halt. I felt her heavy breathing between my thighs. “We’ll walk from here,” Lucien called as he turned to head further down the path.

“Wait, I don’t know how to get down,” I said in a panic. I didn’t even remember getting on Arion. It had happened sometime during our first dizzying connection with each other. The ground seemed to be miles away from the back of a horse.

Arion shook her mane. It is time for you to leave. I will let Alastor mate with me now.

Lucien chuckled. “Would you stop that? It’s obvious you know your way around horses.”

“It was my first time riding,” I said sheepishly. Did I dare to further explain the extent of my connection with Arion? It didn’t seem like a good idea. My grandmother had been gravely foreboding when she warned me to keep my legacy a secret. I worried that Lucien might make the connection between my ability to connect with Arion and my unicorn heritage. It was too big a risk. “Just tell me how to get down.”

He crossed his arms and shot me a bemused look. Arion rocked from side to side and snorted. She was raring to go.

“Please?” I said.

Lucien rolled his eyes and sighed. “Fine. I’ll play your little game. Lean forward and slide one leg over Arion’s backside. Gravity will do the rest.”

I leaned forward so that my face was pressed against Arion’s neck. “Thank you for letting me ride with you today,” I whispered. I slid my leg slowly across her backside as Lucien had instructed and then yelped as I slipped off. The ground rushed toward me. I almost grabbed ahold of her reins again to stop from falling, but my body recoiled from the shared mental image of it jerking her head to the side and hurting her.

Lucien caught me before I hit the dirt feet first. I felt silly, realizing how close to the ground I’d actually been. He held me tight as my heart hammered. We stayed like that for a moment, firmly pressed against each other, my blood pumping hard, his silver eyes penetrating me.

I cleared my throat. “Told you I wasn’t messing around.”

“Riiight.” He smirked as he set me down. “Come on, you have to see this.”

I felt his absence as he pulled away, as if the world grew chillier. Which was a funny sensation, considering Lucien’s skin is perpetually cold.

Arion reared up behind us and whinnied. I turned in surprise to see her already beating her hooves back the way we had come with Alastor close on her heels.
